Pregnant Women Mentoring Programme (PWMP)

FASfacts Pregnant Women Mentoring Programme (PWMP) is a 12-month support and intervention programme to assist pregnant women to abstain from alcohol during their pregnancy, and whilst breastfeeding.
  • Implementation period: 12 months
  • Recruitment of Female mentors – 1 female mentor supports 3 pregnant women
  • Maximum of 20 mentors per one FASfacts Social Worker
  • Training of mentors in the Pregnant Women Mentoring Programme – FAS Awareness Course – 4 Modules presented over a period of about 8 months.

FASfacts Social Worker provides an early intervention service to identify and eliminate risky and problematic substance abuse. The Early Intervention Service consists of individual sessions focused on the following:

Motivational interviewing.
Screening for problematic substance abuse.
Comprehensive assessment with individual development plan for each client.
Advice and goals for change.
Monitoring and referral where applicable.
Family therapy sessions with partners or significant others.
Early recovery and relapse prevention skills.
  • Group training sessions of drinking pregnant women in the Pregnant Women Mentoring Programme; Three Modules spread out over a 12-month period. Modules are divided into smaller parts.
  • Meeting sessions between mentors and pregnant women.
  • Mentor must visit a pregnant woman at least once per week for at least a 1-hour session.
  • Mentor visiting each pregnant woman assigned to her for short periods over weekends at least 2 times per month.
  • At least 3 joint sessions between the mentors and pregnant women to encourage and support the pregnant women. It is also an opportunity to learn from each other.
  • Taking of a photo of the mother, her newborn baby and her mentor and give the mother two copies as a gift as well as a reminder of the FAS-message.
  • Attendance registers will be completed.
  • Providing of a goody bag to each pregnant woman at the conclusion of the project during an Open Day occasion.
  • Visiting of the pregnant women and their respective mentors by FASfacts’ Social Worker every second month.
  • Data capturing of programme data into our database programme;
  • Evaluation of the programme and FASfacts Social Worker by FASfacts Head Office every quarter.
